Corrugated Desk

The Corrugated Desk was designed as the sales desk for the Dunstone Design showroom in 2009. In 2019, the Corrugated Desk was used by BB Productions as the Australian Prime Minister’s desk in the ABC mini-series Black B*tch staring Rachel Griffiths and Deborah Mailman. Director Rachel Perkins was “really keen on [the Corrugated] desk” when she was first shown an image of it. The series will screen on ABC TV in late 2019 or early 2020. Dunstone Design furniture has also been seen in the Jack Irish series staring Guy Pearce.

The original Corrugated Desk (pictured) was made from fumed Tasmanian myrtle. We bought the myrtle while on our honeymoon in 1996 and stored it under sheets of corrugated iron in the bush around David MacLaren’s workshop (David MacLaren is the owner of the Bungendore Wood Works Gallery and trained Evan Dunstone). When the workshop was destroyed by fire in 1998, the only timber to survive was this myrtle, protected by the humble “corro”.

In 2009, the first Dunstone Design showroom was opened in Fyshwick. Evan decided that it was fitting to make the sales desk from the remaining honeymoon myrtle. The corrugated design of the legs were a homage to the humble tin that had protected this beautiful timber and the fuming (which darkened the colours and emphasised the figuring) was a reference to the fire.

The desk pictured has been in constant use since 2009.

“This desk has always meant a lot to me personally. The original is one of the few pieces that I would never consider selling. I was immensely pleased that this desk was selected to represent the Australian Prime Minister’s desk in a major Australian TV series.– Evan Dunstone
